BURNICOMBE FARM WEDDINGS
SUMMER 2011-2012
Who?:Georgina and Trevelyan Evans
Where?: Burnicombe Farm, Bridford, Exeter, Devon
When?: The Summer of 2011-2012
How Long?: 2 Years, Part Time
What I Experienced: Manual Work, ranging from erecting the event Marquees and the 'Tentipis', to maintaining the
pitch for both the Tents. As well as manual work, during the Summer of 2012 I was asked to work behind the bar during the Events, this role I really enjoyed.
About My Time at Burnicombe Farm:
Whilst living on a family farm, it was really interesting to be part of a farm with such diversification as Burnicombe. Due to this my list of jobs here was never the same. A typical event would structure like this, starting during the week to prepare the grounds, e.g. mowing the grass, clearing the site and making sure the Marquee or the 'Tentipis' were ready for the event. After clearing the ground we started to plan out where we were going to pitch the tents. This was either made in discussion with Trevelyan, Georgina and the rest of the employees or a request from the client.
Erecting the Tents required a very strong sense of management and team work. with precise communication and understanding form everyone helping to stand the tents. when constructing the 'Tentipis' i was harnessed to the top of the structure, then using communication and trust with the other workers below I instructed for the other poles to be raised into place, fastened and then guided the canvas over the top.
After the tents are up, we would lay carpet, layout tables chairs as well as decorate the inside of the tents to the clients description. Prior to the event starting i would set up my bar, and pour the welcome drinks for the guests. then as the night progresses i would tend on the bar and pour/supply the guests with there drink requests.
The following day we would all gather again and dismantle the tents, pack them away, if they were wet we would hoist them up in the barn to allow them to dry and then clear the site and finally using the tractor we hitched up the toilet block and trailed them away to store in the shed until the next event.
My time at Burnicombe was a very interesting and active work place. I really enjoyed seeing how a farm can be used in a different way, opposed to keeping live stock and growing crops.
